Like a piece of shell

I. There’s a piece of shell in my pocket

And something dancing in my chest

When I feel its broken edge

I try to smile…

It’s all that’s left.

II. Though I’m not the one who put it there,

I always smile when I find it

It could be worse, really, I swear,

It could have never, in fact, existed.

III. Making it warm in my hands

Tears running faster than your games

I keep it close to remember

The two persons that once, we were.

IV. And all the lands we could have crossed?

What about the promises that we’ve lost?

And the people we gather

When the pain gets deeper?

V. So there’s this shell in my pocket

A bit broken on the edge…

For it reminds me, like a jewel,

We can be both broken, and beautiful. —
